Blue Tongue Lady in a Red Coat

July 9, 2010 in Brunswick GA, Coastal Georgia, Fun, Golden Isles, Sitting on my La-La, So Belle Ya-Ya Sisterhood, This and That

I was duly warned not to move my blue tongue to a red state where the demons of conservatism would certainly eat me alive!

Well, I’m here to tell y’all something. I might slurp up the blueberry juice, and conservatives might lick the red off the candy, but it’s never no mind in the good ole’ south where southerners just don’t know anything about ungracious.

We’ve been in Brunswick for about 1 month and 1/2 now, and loving it more with each day…sure, I grew up here with many childhood memories and am loving the flash backs. But I love the people more. All I have met have warmly invited me into their lives, political leanings aside.

There was a time when I worried that people were defining themselves by their political views, but I can see now I had nothing to worry about.

So, from the Blue Tongue Lady, thank you, to all the really wonderful people down here…and lest I forget, thank you for the great food too. However, I think my growing bulk will probably remind me of how much I love southern food!

Brunswick, Georgia & the Golden Isles

May 17, 2010 in Brunswick GA, Coastal Georgia, Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, Opinions, Protect our Shores, St. Simons Island GA

Many of you who read my posts have probably never heard of Brunswick, Georgia, and might be wondering how this fits into an international scope. But Brunswick and its Golden Isles is part of a world that is much smaller and closer now than it was before. Because of Brunswick’s access to deep water channels, many international ships, including those that carry automobiles, unload at this port. The link between this tiny town and the rest of the world is practically invisible, but it’s strong as kryptonite.

In order to give a place reference to Brunswick and its Islands, you must first know that it’s situated on the Atlantic Ocean about 60 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida, and 80 miles south of Savannah, Georgia. The islands are actually called barrier islands and the green-gold marsh and water that separate the islands from Brunswick is breathtaking in its beauty.

Now that you know where it is, and can perhaps look it up on a map, look to the south down around Miami and to the west toward the Florida Keys. Consider this: the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico is likely to be taken by the Gulf Stream up the east coast and impact towns on the Atlantic. Remember what I said above about the international link? Well, kryptonite is pretty strong, but oil can destroy it.
