Support Our Troops

June 6, 2010 in BP, British Petroleum, Coast Guard, Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, Oil Spill, Opinions, Protect our Shores, Veterans Day

(A Re-Run…I wrote this on June 6, 2010. I really do support our military, just like Gene Simmons. I also agree with Gene Simmons general social outlook. Am I now one of the good guys too?)

A couple of times a year there is usually a big push to support our troops by flying an iconic symbol of a flag on FB pages, and elsewhere…there are numerous positive things written and said about our military, and their sacrifices.

I suggest however that we support our military and their families year-round. There are many ways to do this: volunteer, donate to military organizations, become active in efforts to improve health care for our vets, write your senators and representatives about concerns over budget cuts to the military. None of this has to be in public view but will have a much great impact than simply putting an American flag on your web space. Caring, love and concern should be an ongoing activity and not a simple mouse click.

Each military organization has its own membership of civilians, but the one I am most familiar with is the Navy League, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The dues paid go a long way in providing support to our Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines. Especially now, with the great effort of the Coast Guard in helping to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf, is an excellent time to concretely reaffirm your support of our military.

Deception by the Press

June 6, 2010 in BP, Environment, Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, Oil Spill, Opinions, Political, Protect our Shores

Those who have read my various posts here and on Facebook know that I don’t have much use for Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh et al.

However, I am just as disgusted by deception of left leaning media too. This morning on MSNBC, there was a piece about oil spilling up on Pensacola Beach, Florida. That’s true, but as the interviewee said, you can go miles without seeing any oil, and then there’ll be about 20 yards of oil spots, ranging in size up to a pancake.

As a side bar to the interview, MSNBC kept playing the same video of pieces of the tar balls being picked up over and over. This is wrong. These people are media experts and they know the power of imagery to sway people’s minds.

I am in no way trying to diminish the severity of the oil spill in the Gulf or trying to take focus off BP, the company who caused it. But, I am saying that this disaster is so severe that it transcends media entertainment and attempts at political manipulation. We need to know the truth, and nothing but. It is an insult to all of us when any media outlet plays the disaster to the hilt.

MSNBC, you should raise your level of standards and report only truth, not video clips of the same piece of film  run over and over and over.

No poet or novelist wishes he was the only one who ever lived, but most of
them wish they were the only one alive, and quite a number fondly believe
their wish has been granted.
